CROWELL & MORING Crowell & Moring has expanded its intellectual property practice with the addition of six attorneys in D.C. Lawrence Carter, 34, has joined as an associate concentrating on patent prosecution. Carter was a patent associate at Fenwick & West and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. Richard Jordan, 49, has joined as counsel concentrating on patents. Jordan was a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon. He holds a law degree from George Mason University School of Law. Grace Lawson, 36, has joined as senior counsel in the corporate groups practice as a trademark specialist. Lawson was a partner at Lipstein, Jaffe & Lawson. She received her J.D. from George Mason University School of Law. Christopher McWhinney, 31, has joined as an associate, focusing on patents. McWhinney was an associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. He earned his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law. Mark Neblett, 44, has joined as counsel specializing on preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical and electrical arts. Neblett was a senior patent associate at Kenyon & Kenyon. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. William Sauers, 31, has joined as an associate focusing on trademark law. Sauers was a trademark examiner with the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is a graduate of Villanova University School of Law. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY C. Stewart Verdery Jr. has been confirmed as the first assistant secretary for border and transportation security policy and planning at the Department of Homeland Security. In this post, Verdery will serve as primary adviser to Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson on a host of issues, including including immigration and customs inspection and investigations, cargo and trade policy, and transportation security, among others. A former general counsel to Assistant Republican Leader Sen. Don Nickles (R-Okla.) from 1998 to 2002, Verdery was senior legislative counsel for the government affairs and public policy office representing Vivendi Universal Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Vivendi Universal in D.C from 2002 to 2003. Verdery, 36, graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law. PATTON BOGGS Patton Boggs has added two new partners in its D.C. office. Norman Antin, 47, has joined the firm’s corporate finance practice in its D.C. office. Antin was a partner at Kelley Drye & Warren, focusing on the financial services industry. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut Law School. Jeffery Haas, 41, has also joined the firm’s corporate finance practice in D.C. and was also a partner at Kelley Drye & Warren. Haas is a graduate of George Washington University Law School. ROTHWELL, FIGG, ERNST & MANBECK D.C.’s Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck has added two new attorneys. Joo Mee Kim, 37, has joined as an associate, concentrating in biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and chemical patent prosecution and litigation. Kim was an associate at Foley & Larder and is a graduate of George Washington University Law School. Barbara Webb Walker, 54, has joined as of counsel, also focusing on biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and chemical patent prosecution and litigation. She was an associate at Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis. Walker holds a law degree from George Mason University School of Law. SUTHERLAND ASBILL & BRENNAN Stephen Rosenblatt has joined Sutherland Asbill & Brennan’s D.C. office as counsel. Rosenblatt, 41, was chief counsel of the Sheet Metal Workers’ National Pension Plan. He earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. The firm’s D.C. office has also added nine associates who were previously summer associates in the District. John Anderson, 32, has joined the litigation practice and received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. Matthew Binette, 30, has joined the energy practice and holds a law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Sonia Boutillon, 24, has also joined the energy practice. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. Shanyn Gillespie, 24, has joined the litigation practice. Gillespie graduated from George Washington University Law School. Phuc Hong Lu, 25, has joined the corporate practice. Lu is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law. Nathan Mintz, 26, has joined the tax practice and is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. Lisa Morgan, 27, has joined the corporate practice and received her J.D at the University of North Carolina School of Law. Lisa Pellegrino, 24, will be based in the financial services practice. She holds a law degree from George Mason University School of Law. Cynthia Reid, 25, has also joined the financial services practice. Reid earned her law degree from George Washington University Law School. WILLKIE FARR & GALLAGHER Timothy McTaggart has joined the D.C. office of Willkie Farr & Gallagher as partner in the firm’s corporate and financial services department. McTaggart, a former partner at Nixon Peabody, will specialize in bank and financial services along with regulatory matters.
