FREE SPEECH FOR GROUPS TOO To the editor: Evan P. Schultz’s commentary on the campaign finance case [" When Justices Play Magic Tricks," Sept. 29, 2003, Page 50] doesn’t convince me. The First Amendment doesn’t say, “People have the right to speak and write freely.” It says, “Congress shall make no law. . . .” Therefore, opponents of McCain-Feingold don’t argue, and don’t need to argue, that corporations are people. That is off the subject. The First Amendment, in my opinion, guarantees groups as well as individuals the right to free speech. Corporations, unincorporated associations, political parties, churches, and labor unions are all covered by the First Amendment. That’s because the First Amendment doesn’t talk about the right of the people. It says, “no law,” so it covers everybody and every thing. Richard Winger San Francisco
