NOSSAMAN OPENS 5TH OFFICE IN VIRGINIA Los Angeles-based Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott has established its first out-of-state satellite with an office in Arlington, Va. The office opened for business Monday with one partner, Karen Hedlund, a transplant from the firm’s L.A. headquarters. The firm may hire associates for the office, and it expects many of its California-based lawyers to use the space as a base while working on local matters, Hedlund said. The 135-laywer Nossaman specializes in representing large municipalities and state governments in partnerships with private companies to build bridges, highways and other infrastructure projects. The firm also has offices in San Francisco, Sacramento and Irvine. Nossaman has been representing the Virginia Department of Transportation since the state adopted legislation in the mid-1990s enabling it to partner with private companies, Hedlund said. Nossaman’s work with Virginia in recent years prompted the firm to invest in a local office and to relocate Hedlund, a seven-year Nossaman veteran. “Virginia has been a significant client in the last couple of years,” Hedlund said. “You want to be able to service your client on two hours’ notice, and it’s not efficient to spend all your time on airplanes.” The firm has represented Virginia in a handful of bridge and highway projects and helped the state develop new ways to structure maintenance contracts. Nossaman’s 20-lawyer infrastructure group has done similar work in New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York, Hedlund said. — Renee Deger MORGAN, LEWIS ADDS LAWYERS FROM ZEVNIK PHILADELPHIA — Morgan, Lewis & Bockius on Wednesday added 27 lawyers and opened new offices in Chicago and Boston after acquiring the bulk of Zevnik Horton, a boutique focusing on insurance recovery litigation. Combined with additions from now-defunct Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison earlier this year, Morgan, Lewis Chairman Fran Milone said he thinks the firm will have one of the strongest national practices in the insurance recovery area. Zevnik Horton opened its doors only two years ago. Name partner Paul Zevnik is a Washington, D.C., lawyer who began his career at Covington & Burling but is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, New York and California. After the Brobeck acquisition in February, Paul Zevnik thought a union with Morgan, Lewis might make sense. He said he has known some of the Brobeck insurance recovery lawyers for a number of years, most specifically Los Angeles partner David Halbreich. “Our firm was doing well financially, so money was not a factor [in seeking out Morgan, Lewis],” he said. “It just made complete sense and was real fortuitous timing with all of the Brobeck people there now. We have a goal of having the best practice in this area in the entire country.” Milone said he received a call from Paul Zevnik last month and that a deal was reached relatively fast. — The Legal Intelligencer
