ANGEL IN ADOPTION AWARD Mark McDermott of D.C.’s Joseph, McDermott & Reiner will receive an Angel in Adoption award at a Sept. 30 event hosted by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) selected McDermott as the recipient to recognize his work in spearheading adoption reforms and also for his service as a founding member and past president of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys. He is currently legislative chairman of the AAAA. EQUALITY AWARD Paul Smith, managing partner in the D.C. office of Jenner & Block, was presented with the Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest lesbian and gay political organization. Smith received the award at a July 26 ceremony in San Francisco for his successful representation of the petitioners in the U.S. Supreme Court case of Lawrence v. Texas, in which the high court struck down a state anti-sodomy law. JUDICIAL NOMINATING COMMITTEE Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich has appointed Upper Marlboro, Md.-based civil rights attorney Jimmy Bell to the Appellate Court Judicial Nominating Committee. SHAKESPEARE THEATRE BOARD Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi partner Robert Falb has been named vice chair of the Shakespeare Theatre board of trustees. The Shakespeare Theatre is among the nation’s premier classic theatres, and Falb has served on its board for one year. U.S. TRADE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Jerry Block, an environmental and corporate defense partner in the D.C. office of Venable, has been named chairman of the U.S. Trade and Environmental Policy Advisory Committee.
