a man who is now legally blind after a specialist allegedly failed to treat retinal detachments in a timely fashion settled for $600,000 on June 25. Timothy Von Schmidt was referred to specialist Jacqueline Watskin for a retinal detachment in his left eye. Watskin scheduled surgery for March 4, 1998. However, the surgery was delayed one day, and, by then, the size of a tear had increased, a second tear had developed and blood was in the eye. Von Schmidt also claimed that a similar condition existed in the right eye, but went undetected, causing detachment in that eye as well. He sued Watskin, claiming that she should have performed a more complex operation on March 5 and provided better care with regard to the other eye. Von Schmidt v. Watskin, No. L 000714 00 (Ocean Co., N.J., Super. Ct.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Amos Gern and John Ratkowitz, Starr, Gern, Davidson & Rubin, Roseland, N.J. DEFENSE ATTORNEYS: Richard J. Bolger and Charles Daley Jr., Orlovsky, Grasso & Bolger, Toms River, N.J.
