General counsel who want to secure compensation that will draw and retain talented lawyers should take the following steps: Identify and obtain legal-specific salary surveys. Note that job titles used in surveys may not be the same as those in your department so be sure to match the job descriptions in your department to those used in the surveys. Review salary data for comparably experienced lawyers at private law firms. Consider how the quality of lawyers on your staff compares to that of lawyers in the survey. Incorporate this information. After these steps have been taken, the general counsel should take the most relevant elements from the analyses and fashion a cogent argument that can be presented to the HR department. If these steps are followed, it is much more likely that the law department will be able to attract, motivate, and retain the lawyers it needs.
