AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION The Homeland Security Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice has confirmed Laurence Storch as vice chairman. Storch is a partner in the D.C. office of Dilworth Paxson. AMERICAN TORT REFORM ASSOCIATION The American Tort Reform Association has chosen former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, now a partner at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, and Victor Schwartz, a partner in the D.C. office of Shook, Hardy & Bacon, to be among its first group of “Legal Reform Champions.” ATRA seeks to recognize attorneys who take a public stand against abusive lawsuits and complete pro bono work on behalf of civil justice reform organizations. D.C. BAR At the D.C. Bar’s Annual Business Meeting and Awards Dinner on June 25, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was presented with the William J. Brennan Jr. Award. The biannual award honors exceptional achievement in the pursuit of equal justice and opportunity for all Americans. MEDIA INSTITUTE The Media Institute announced new additions to its board of trustees and its First Amendment Advisory Council. The new board members are David Fleming, senior legal counsel for the Gannett Co., and Kurt Wimmer, a partner at Covington & Burling. Joining the First Amendment Advisory Council are Bruce Sanford, a partner at Baker & Hostetler and general counsel for the Society of Professional Journalists; David Hudson Jr., research attorney for the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University; and Ashley Gauthier, legal counsel for U.S. News & World Report. The Media Institute is a nonprofit research foundation that focuses on freedom of speech, a competitive media industry, and excellence in journalism. JUSTICE POTTER STEWART AWARDS Alan Morrison of the Public Citizen Litigation Group and Willie Cook, formerly of the District of Columbia’s Neighborhood Legal Services Program, were presented with the Justice Potter Stewart Award by the Council for Court Excellence at its seventh annual awards dinner on June 19.
