Arter & Hadden announced Thursday that partners have voted to cease operations on July 15. A statement from Arter Chairman Daniel Bailey said the firm will continue to represent clients by moving them to other firms or the firm’s lawyers will establish new, smaller firms. Based in Cleveland, Arter & Hadden expanded nationally during the 1980s and 1990s, peaking at 450 lawyers in 1999. A slump in work and partner departures ate away at the firm’s ranks and revenues in recent years, leaving it with too much office space. The firm is now down to about 240 lawyers. “Much of our dramatic growth was unprofitable, which led to significant attrition in certain offices,” Bailey said in the statement. “While this was a difficult decision, we are confident that taking these steps now in an orderly manner is in the best interests of our clients, lawyers and staff.”
