ACCOUNTANT a lawyer was awarded just over $1 million on June 3 in his professional negligence suit against an accounting firm. Robert Baime was a stockholder in Raven, Sarasohn, Cook, Baumgarten, Fisch & Rosen of Roseland, N.J., a law firm organized as a professional corporation. When he left the firm, a dispute arose over the value of his stock. He sued the firm; the judge agreed with him as to the value of the stock. The firm then hired Ernst & Young to determine the book value. Claiming that his share had been undervalued by $800,000, he sued Ernst & Young, arguing that it had acted as an advocate for the firm rather than as an impartial accountant. The New Jersey jury found the defendants 100% liable. Baime v. Ernst & Young, No. MRS-L-1083-01 (Morris Co., N.J., Super. Ct.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEY: Bruce H. Snyder, Lasser Hochman, Roseland, N.J. DEFENSE ATTORNEY: David R. Kott, McCarter & English, Newark, N.J.
