It was the Consumer Attorneys of California (CACA) and their excessive influence over both our legislature and our governor, as witnessed by the recent changes to the court rules, that persuaded me to sign a recall petition, notwithstanding my belief that it is bad public policy to remove and elect governors in this fashion. [ "Plaintiffs bar ready for new fight over malpractice caps,"June 20.] If CACA is successful in removing the caps in MICRA, there will be a flight of insurance companies willing to underwrite medical malpractice insurance from California that will make the problems that gave rise to MICRA in the first place look trivial by comparison. Gray Davis is unlikely to have either the power base or the fortitude to buck that group as Jerry Brown did to alleviate the crisis back in 1975. It’s a sad day, when moderate Democrats are targeted by plaintiffs lawyers in favor of so-called “progressives.” Let’s not pervert the meaning of the word “progressive” when “greedy” is so much more apt.
