The Judicial Council of California, which sets policy for the state’s trial and appellate courts, will soon have five new faces. On Friday, Chief Justice Ronald George announced the appointments of Judges Michael Garcia, William Murray Jr., Michael Nash, Richard Strauss and attorney Rex Heinke. Their three-year terms begin Sept. 14. Garcia, presiding judge of the Sacramento County Superior Court, replaces Alameda County Superior Court Judge Ronald Sabraw. Murray, a judge on the San Joaquin County Superior Court, replaces Fresno County Superior Court Presiding Judge Brad Hill. Nash, presiding judge of the juvenile division of Los Angeles County Superior Court, replaces L.A. County Superior Court Judge Aviva Bobb. Strauss, presiding judge of the San Diego County Superior Court, replaces Orange County Superior Court Judge Gail Andler. Heinke, a partner in L.A.’s Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, replaces Rex Heeseman, a partner in the L.A. office of San Diego’s Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps. Heinke was selected by the State Bar of California, which appoints the council’s four attorney members. Chief Justice George names the 14 judge members. In addition, Alan Slater, the executive officer of the Orange County Superior Court, was reappointed for a new three-year term as an advisory member.
