EMPLOYMENT a woman who claimed that her company refused to promote her and then retaliated against her was awarded $4 million by a Washington jury on May 19. In 1983, Cheryl Forbes, then 28, began working for American Building Maintenance West in Spokane, Wash. In 1988, Forbes was promoted to branch manager, the highest level reached by a woman at the company within the nationwide janitorial division, and, in 1994-95, she was one of the company’s highest-producing managers. Forbes claimed that when she asked to be promoted to regional manager, she was investigated for improprieties and ultimately demoted. American Building argued that it offered Forbes promotions, which she refused. Forbes v. American Building Maintenance Co. West, No. 99-2-05753-2 (Spokane Co., Wash., Super. Ct.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Mary E. Schultz and Amy Rimov, Mary Schultz & Associates, Spokane, Wash. DEFENSE ATTORNEYS: Keller Allen and Thomas McLane, Allen & McLane, Spokane
