The newly formed EnCana Corporation has decided that it wants to focus on production, not on pipelines. In January the company sold its Express Pipeline System, which delivers crude oil produced in Alberta to refineries in Wyoming and Illinois, to a consortium of companies, including BC Gas Inc., for $830 million. The deal includes the assumption of about $410 million in project financing on the system. The other members of the consortium are the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board and Borealis Infrastructure Management Inc. EnCana was created in April 2002 from a merger between Albert Energy Company and PanCanadian Energy Corporation. The Express Pipeline sale came only a week after EnCana sold its 70 percent interest in the Cold Lake Pipeline System to Inter Pipeline Fund for $300 million. The new company is focusing on oil and gas production as well as gas storage, and using the cash from the pipeline sales to pay down debt.
