INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY tommy hilfiger Licensing Inc. was awarded more than $11 million by a Georgia judge on May 9 on its claim that a discount clothing chain sold Hilfiger knockoffs. In 1999 and 2000, Goody’s Family Clothing of Knoxville, Tenn., sold hundreds of thousands of jeans and T-shirts bearing the Hilfiger flag logo, the designer’s attorneys said. Newark, Del.-based Tommy Hilfiger Licensing sued Goody’s, claiming that it sold the counterfeit T-shirts without checking whether the vendors were authorized by Hilfiger, and that the three brands of jeans it carried incorporated the flag logo into their designs. Hilfiger claimed that Goody’s profited to the tune of about $8.97 million on the jeans and $690,000 on the T-shirts. Tommy Hilfiger Licensing v. Goody’s Family Clothing, No. 00-CV-1934 (N.D. Ga.).
