MEDICAL MALPRACTICE the estate of a 53-year-old man who died because of a delayed tongue cancer diagnosis was awarded $4.1 million by a Pennsylvania jury on May 13. Robert Jones was diagnosed with oral cavity leukoplakia, a tongue lesion. The lesion was biopsied three times between 1993 and 1997, and each time no cancer was found. Jones then went to Dr. William Lovrinic three times between October 1998 and September 1999, complaining of soreness; each time no biopsy was ordered. In October 1999, Lovrinic’s partner ordered a biopsy and found cancer. Jones’ estate sued Lovrinic and his employer. The defense claimed the care was appropriate. Estate of Jones v. Lovrinic, No. 000701819 (Philadelphia Ct. C.P.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEY: James Beasley Jr., The Beasley Firm, Philadelphia DEFENSE ATTORNEY: William Pugh V, Kane, Pugh, Knoell & Driscoll, Norristown, Pa.
