ROPES & GRAY BUILDS MANAGEMENT TEAM Former Robertson, Stephens & Co. general counsel Dana Welch started work this week as co-managing partner of the San Francisco office of Boston’s Ropes & Gray. Welch, the second partner in the eight-lawyer office, is joining the firm to build a practice representing companies and individuals in dealings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and other regulatory agencies. She will also pitch in with management duties to assist John Chesley II, the partner who has been managing the office in addition to representing healthcare companies. Welch said she opted to join Ropes & Gray because of the opportunity to expand her area of expertise with people she has known for years. She said she was a client of Ropes & Gray while she was general counsel at Robertson, a post she held for five years before also assuming the role of chief administrative officer for nearly a year. Welch left Robertson in June 2001, about a year before the San Francisco investment bank went out of business. She went into business as an independent mediator for business disputes and arbitrator in securities arguments. Prior to joining Robertson, Welch spent three years each at O’Melveny & Myers and Shearman & Sterling. – Renee Deger MEYERS, NAVE ADDS TO SACRAMENTO STAFF Oakland’s Meyers, Nave, Riback, Silver & Wilson has signaled a push into a Sacramento market by landing two partners from a rival firm and opening an larger branch. On Wednesday, the firm announced that Michael Dean and Ruthann Ziegler, both partners from Kronick Moskovitz Tiedemann &Girard, are now working at Meyers, Nave’s downtown Sacramento office at 455 Capitol Mall. Both Meyers, Nave and Kronick Moskovitz specialize in representing government entities. Dean has practiced law for 28 years and is an expert in land use, conflict of interest and open meetings laws. Ziegler represents cities and special districts, including water, public utility, sanitary and fire protection. Dean and Ziegler will join Meyers, Nave as partners. Ziegler, Dean and name partner Steven Meyers were unavailable for comment, as was Kronick Moskovitz Managing Partner Michael Grob. Meyers, Nave has a strategic plan to add up to 12 lawyers to the new Sacramento office over the next few years, said firm Executive Director Donald Oppenheim. Before, the Meyers, Naves office in Sacramento was at 980 Ninth Street, and it was primarily a place for attorneys to work when they were in town. Dean and Zeigler will work out of the new office full time, and the firm is hiring two associates to help, Oppenheim said. In a press release, Meyers called the new hires a “milestone” in his firm’s growth strategy: “Both attorneys are highly respected for their knowledge and understanding of the issues facing municipalities and special districts,” he said. – Jahna Berry
