Two corporate attorneys have jumped to Reed Smith Crosby Heafey. The firm announced Thursday it has added Matt Kirmayer, a former Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich partner in San Diego, and Laura Donald, a former Venture Law Group partner in Menlo Park. Kirmayer specializes in venture capital work. He has joined as partner in the San Francisco office. Donald focuses on business litigation and does securities work, with an emphasis on emerging growth companies and startups. She is now working in Reed Smith’s Oakland office as of counsel. Donald’s departure from VLG comes at a time when the Menlo Park firm is mulling a merger. Sources within the firm have said that Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe — which has a client-sharing agreement with VLG — is a possible mate. Reed Smith has been trying to grow its West Coast venture law practice since it merged with Oakland-based Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May in January. The merger gave Pittsburgh-based Reed Smith California offices, and the combined firm has nearly 1,000 attorneys. “The addition of Matt and Laura to our technology and venture practice brings greater experience and depth to our team,” said Gregory Beattie, the Oakland Reed Smith partner who heads that group, in a press release. “Despite a sluggish California economy, we should continue to build a better, stronger firm by hiring great talent when it becomes available,” Beattie said. A Gray Cary spokesman declined comment, and a Venture Law Group spokesperson could not be reached for comment Thursday.
