ASBESTOS the estate and widow of a man who died of mesothelioma were awarded $6.4 million by a Maryland jury on April 3 against Owens-Illinois Inc., manufacturer of Kaylo-pipe insulation that contains asbestos. In the summer of 1956, Harry Hunter worked in a Coast Guard shipyard in Baltimore, where he was exposed to Kaylo, as well as other products containing asbestos made by other companies. Forty years later he was diagnosed with the disease. Of the many companies sued, his case against Owens-Illinois Inc. was the only one to go to the jury. Owens’ defense was that Hunter worked in the electronics shop. Of the total verdict, $4.3 million was for noneconomic damages, subject to a cap of $590,000. Hunter v. Owens-Illinois Inc., No. 24-X-01000462 (Baltimore city, Md., Cir. Ct.). PLAINTIFFS’ ATTORNEYS: Charles A. Candon, Carol A. Hastings, Gary J. Ignatowski and Steven W. Smith, Law Offices of Peter G.
