EMPLOYMENT a 56-year-old man who alleged that he was fired because of his age was awarded $7.8 million, including $6 million in punitives, by an Ohio jury on April 7. Thomas Sadowski and about 30 other workers were laid off from the Highland Heights, Ohio, plant of Philips Medical Systems, a medical equipment manufacturer. Sadowski, an engineer, claimed that he was one of three workers from his department to be laid off, all of whom were 54 or older. When he heard that the company, which has about 1,000 employees in the Ohio plant, had openings, Sadowski applied for several of them, but was refused. He sued the company for age discrimination and retaliation for refusing to hire him after he filed the instant lawsuit. Sadowski v. Philips Medical Systems (Cleveland) Inc., No. 477-154 (Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Ct. C.P.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Christopher P. Thorman and Amy Glesius, The Thorman Law Firm, Cleveland; David A.
