JONES DAY’S NEW HIRE Jones Day has snagged one of ChevronTexaco’s top outside counsel from Pillsbury Winthrop to help the firm launch a new office in San Francisco. Robert Mittelstaedt, a veteran of Pillsbury for more than two decades, told his colleagues last week that he would be leaving to join Jones Day. Andrea Wirum, managing partner of Pillsbury’s San Francisco office, confirms that Mittelstaedt has resigned. She says the exact date of his departure is uncertain. Jones Day declined to comment, and Mittelstaedt could not be reached for comment. Jones Day may have lured Mittelstaedt through its connections to the ChevronTexaco Corp. The oil company recently hired former Jones Day partner Charles James, former antitrust chief at the U.S. Department of Justice, as its general counsel. ChevronTexaco has for decades tapped Pillsbury partners for its top legal spot. Mittelstaedt has been one of the oil company’s lead litigators, representing the company in cases ranging from sexual harassment and gender discrimination to price-fixing complaints. Wirum says Pillsbury does not expect to lose business with Mittelstaedt’s departure. Mittelstaedt headed Pillsbury’s D.C. office from 1989 to 1991 and was managing partner of the San Francisco office from 1992 to 1994. — Brenda Sandburg DAVIS WRIGHT MERGER Seattle-based Davis Wright Tremaine is acquiring six partners and four associates from New York’s Kay & Boose, giving the firm a total of 30 attorneys in its Manhattan outpost.
