INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY an inventor was awarded $12 million on April 1 by an Illinois jury in his counterclaim against a company that, he alleged, had infringed on his communications patent. Defendant Philip Jackson invented a system that allows people to access different devices by way of a touchtone phone. Most significantly, this technology is used in voice mail. Jackson patented the system in 1986. When he demanded that Glenayre Electronics Inc. of Duluth, Ga., pay him for using the patent, Glenayre sued for declaratory judgment. Jackson countersued for infringement. Glenayre Electronics Inc. v. Jackson, No. 02-CV-256 (N.D. Ill.). PLAINTIFF’S ATTORNEYS: Philip P. Mann and Thomas M.
