Perkins Coie has hired five intellectual property lawyers from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, including life sciences litigator Paul Andre. Edward Wes Jr., managing partner of Perkins’ Menlo Park office, said the new team of lawyers helps round out the firm’s IP expertise in Northern California. Perkins’ IP team includes three patent prosecution partners that count life science companies among their clients, and the new arrivals will come in handy, Wes said. “They fit like a glove with what we’re doing,” Wes said, adding that life sciences expertise is a rare find among IP lawyers in the market for new firms. “I think it’s really a sweet spot,” Wes said. “There aren’t many people who do it.” Wes said the team also arrived with a backlog of work. With the new arrivals, Perkins has 23 IP litigators in its Northern California offices in Menlo Park and San Francisco. Andre, who is joining Perkins as a partner, brought with him three lawyers from Quinn Emanuel — Joel Curzon, Amanda Fox, Lisa Kobialka — who are joining Perkins as associates. The fourth lawyer to follow Andre, Norbert Stahl, is joining Perkins as of counsel. While Perkins is celebrating the new hires, Quinn Emanuel’s managing partner in Northern California, Charles Verhoeven, said the exits have not produced a big gap in the firm’s Silicon Valley practice. Verhoeven said the firm hired Andre from Brobeck in June 2001 to jumpstart a biotechnology litigation practice that failed to materialize. “In the short time (Andre) was here, no significant business was developed,” Verhoeven said. “He essentially decided to look for another firm.” Andre was traveling and could not be reached for comment.
