All him the Prince formerly known as general counsel: Citigroup Inc.’s ex-top lawyer and chief operating officer Charles Prince has been anointed chairman and CEO of the conglomerate’s investment bank, Salomon Smith Barney. The 52-year-old Prince has been with Citigroup for 23 years and is known as a trusted consigliere of Citigroup chairman and CEO Sanford Weill. An expert troubleshooter, Prince’s mandate is to re-solve government investigations and investor suits arising from the company’s financing of Enron Corp. and struggling tele-communications businesses. Citigroup’s share price has plummeted this year, largely due to the blizzard of legal problems that has engulfed the company. Weill clearly believes the job demands a lawyer, and Prince has a proven track record: In 1998 he helped clear the legal and political obstacles to the merger of Travelers Group Inc. and Citicorp. If he manages to clean up Citigroup’s current mess, Prince might just end up inheriting Weill’s throne.
