Lmost 600 lawyers at 50 Fortune 1000 companies took part in our 2002 Quality of Life Survey of in-house legal departments. Twenty-eight of those companies had at least five respondents, and the chart on page 66 contains those businesses’ responses. All other charts include results from all 50 companies. In addition to demographic information, we asked respondents about their jobs, benefits, hours, compensation, opportunities for advancement, and relationships with outside counsel and their own clients. The survey, conducted through an online questionnaire, was anonymous, though some respondents provided contact information for follow-up. Some charts do not add up to 100 percent, due to rounding. In some instances, this was because of incomplete responses for a particular question or because a question included multiple choices. Participating companies include: Allergan, Inc.; Applied Materials, Inc.; Aquila, Inc.; Ashland Inc.; CIGNA Corporation; CVS Corporation; Caremark Rx, Inc.; Centex Corporation; The Clorox Company; Compass Bancshares, Inc.; Continental Airlines, Inc.; Costco Wholesale Corporation; Cox Communications, Inc.; Cummins, Inc.; Dell Computer Corporation; Dynegy Inc.; Exelon Corporation; Fannie Mae; Golden State Bancorp Inc.; Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc.; Honeywell International Inc.; Ingram Micro Inc.; Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.; Levi Strauss & Co.; Lowe’s Companies, Inc.; Lyondell Chemical Company; Masco Corporation; NCR Corporation; Navistar International Corporation; New York Life Insurance Company; Nike, Inc.; The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company; ONEOK Inc.; PG&E Corporation; Payless ShoeSource, Inc.; PeopleSoft, Inc.; Principal Financial Group, Inc.; QUALCOMM Incorporated; R.J.
