Johnna Spera beat the odds: Only once, and very briefly, during the 12 years she served as assistant general counsel for The Charles E. Smith Companies of Arlington, Virginia, did she live in one her employer’s buildings. That was an amazing feat, considering the chunk of residential and commercial real estate the business owns in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Now, Spera has moved up to Consolidated Engineering Services, Inc., another division of the corporation, where she will be the new vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. Spera, 38, the sole member of Consolidated’s legal department, reports to the president. “The biggest challenge is going to be integrating the general counsel position into the company and its 12 divisions and affiliates,” says the 1988 University of Virginia School of Law graduate. Prior to joining Smith, she was an associate at Light & Harrison in McLean, Virginia.
