Timothy O’Rourke’s past has caught up with him. He recently joined Atlanta-based media company Cox Enterprises, Inc., as associate general counsel for litigation; he now reports to Andrew Merdek, vice president in charge of legal affairs. It was Merdek who recruited O’Rourke to join D.C.’s Dow, Lohnes & Albertson over 20 years ago. After making partner at Dow, Lohnes in 1990, O’Rourke joined the U.S. Department of Justice in 1992 as deputy assistant attorney general in the civil division. He returned to the firm in 1993. For almost two decades, O’Rourke worked on matters for Cox as outside counsel. Cox is the thirty-fourth- largest private corporation in the United States, according to Forbes magazine. Its assets include 18 daily newspapers and 30 nondailies in its newspapers division; 15 television stations in its TV division; and 80 radio stations in its publicly traded radio subsidiary. At the media giant, O’Rourke, 45, will work on dispute resolution, antitrust matters, and trade regulation counseling. He says his goal at the company is to push litigation cases forward aggressively: “We want to dispose by motion, try it, or settle it. But in short order.” He’ll handle a range of litigation matters-including libel and employment cases. O’Rourke graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1981.
