It seems to have been the longest on-off romance in corporate history. Granada and Carlton have been alternative flirting and sulking with each other for years. Today the lovers were again arm in arm talking about a rosy future together. On one level the marriage is a no-brainer. The scale economies of combining ITV companies are compelling. The original network of 15 regional companies has already come down to five as they reap the savings of combining advertising sales programme making, and other costly aspects of running commercial television.
