Teveia Barnes has resigned as executive director of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Barnes had been hired to BASF’s top job just 16 months ago following a 17-year run by her predecessor, Drucilla Ramey. “I have achieved the board’s goals here at BASF, and am proud of my accomplishments. But it is now time for me to move on,” Barnes said in a press release BASF issued on Wednesday. She said she will be seeking a more “hands-on legal practice” that is focused on social justice. Barnes arrived at BASF at a challenging time. The combination of the recession and the Sept. 11 attacks squeezed many bar association’s fund raising, and BASF was forced to lay off 16 of its 100-member staff last summer. Some staff members complained that Barnes was too quick to cut services and overly concerned about the bottom line. BASF President Jeffrey Bleich said in the press release that Barnes steered the bar through a difficult period. “Speaking on behalf of the entire board, we have appreciated Teveia’s leadership and many contributions and accomplishments over the past few years. . . .We wish her well as she moves on to pursuing her passion for social justice.”
