FORMER JUDGE IS BACK WITH JAMS Former federal judge John Davies is rejoining alternative dispute resolution provider JAMS a little over a year after he left the company to go solo. Davies will return to JAMS as a mediator and arbitrator in February, working primarily out of the Oxnard office. Davies, whose ADR firm Bakaly & Davies merged with JAMS in October 2000, left JAMS the following year to set up his own practice in Los Angeles. “Returning to JAMS allows me to focus solely on resolving disputes,” said Davies in a statement. “JAMS provides efficient administrative and case management support, which is invaluable to busy neutrals and clients involved in multi-party, complex cases.” Davies also cited the advantage of commuting to the Oxnard office, 20 minutes from his Santa Barbara home, as a factor in his decision to return. Before becoming an arbitrator and mediator, Davies served 12 years as a federal judge for the Central District Court of California. The 73-year-old is also an Olympic gold medalist in swimming. — Alexei Oreskovic NEW LEADER, OFFICE FOR GORDON & REES Gordon & Rees has named Sara Thorpe managing partner of its San Francisco office, and has also opened a new location in Las Vegas. Thorpe, 45, joined the firm in 1990 as a fifth-year associate and made partner in 1995. “People are asking me if congratulations are in order, or condolences,” joked Thorpe in a press release. She says she is very excited about the opportunity to contribute more to the firm. She practices in the firm’s insurance coverage advice and litigation group. Prior to accepting the new position, Thorpe worked as a liaison between the firmwide managing partner and the firm’s 10 practice groups. She earned her law degree in 1984 from University of San Francisco School of Law. The new office in Las Vegas will be staffed to offer a full-service defense litigation practice, said San Francisco-based partner Michael Pietrykowski, who handles some of the firm’s Las Vegas-based cases. The new office will handle a variety of matters including health care, construction, insurance, environmental and toxic torts. In addition to San Francisco and Las Vegas, Gordon & Rees has 170 attorneys in offices in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Irvine, San Diego and Portland. — Jason Dearen
