Ernest Sevier, a longtime partner at San Francisco’s Severson & Werson, died Nov. 3 of a heart attack. He was 70 years old. During his 40-year career at Severson & Werson, Sevier was one of the firm’s vital figures. He helped grow Severson & Werson into a 70-attorney litigation shop with two California offices and developed the construction and insurance practice into one of the firm’s core practices. Colleagues remember Sevier as a mentor with a passion for learning and a seemingly limitless supply of energy. “He was a man of incredible energy, incredible intensity and incredible integrity,” said partner David Ericksen. “He was a real student of history, of art and of music. In any given time, he’d be reading somewhere between five or six books.” A Stanford Law School graduate, Sevier launched his legal career with a two-year stint with the Air Force JAG Corps. He joined Severson & Werson in 1962, and quickly assumed responsibility for the nascent insurance and construction practice. He served on the firm’s managing committee for several years. “I still turned to Ernie recently from time to time for advice and guidance,” said Mark Kenney, the firm’s managing director. In addition to being a tenacious litigator, Sevier had a strong commitment to his clients. “He insisted that our first concern should always be their well-being,” said Kenney. This dedication to client satisfaction led to Sevier’s activities regarding professional ethics. From 1991 to 1994, he served as chairman of the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Responsibility for Client Protection. Most recently, he was a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability. A memorial for Sevier will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew in San Mateo. Sevier is survived by his wife and two daughters.
