Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has snagged Clifford Chance’s Douglas Benson to fill the post of chief operating officer. Benson, who has been COO of Clifford Chance’s Americas region for the past three years, will join Orrick’s New York office Sept. 3. He replaces Bruce Boulware, who is leaving Orrick at the end of the month to join O’Melveny & Myers. Benson has spent almost two decades managing law firm operations. Prior to his stint at Clifford Chance, he spent seven years as executive director at Shearman & Sterling and prior to that seven years as executive director at Latham & Watkins. “Orrick is sort of poised to take off to be a premiere firm and leader,” Benson said. “I think I can help them achieve the next level.” Orrick Chairman Ralph Baxter Jr. said Benson is “one of the best known and highly regarded people” in law firm operations. Orrick has also raided the ranks of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison’s marketing department. Karen Appleton, marketing manager of Brobeck’s Silicon Valley office, was recently hired as director of business development in Orrick’s Silicon Valley office. Lise Tribel, marketing manager of Brobeck’s New York office, is set to join Orrick Sept. 3 as manager of the firm’s corporate practice. And John Veldkamp, a database expert who tracks business development initiatives at Brobeck, will also jump to Orrick at the beginning of September. The three join former Brobeck marketing director David Geyer, who came to Orrick in June to head the firm’s marketing department.
