After a three-year stint at Latham & Watkins, patent litigation partner Vernon Winters has jumped to the Redwood Shores office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Winters, who begins at Weil, Gotshal today as a partner, had joined Latham’s Menlo Park office in August 1999. A year prior to that he co-founded Cupertino’s Day Casebeer Madrid Winters & Batchelder with a group that split from Cooley Godward. Winters said he wasn’t looking to leave Latham but got a call from a headhunter and since the position was at Weil he decided to talk to the firm. “If you were a baseball player, it’s like the Yankees calling you up and saying ‘do you want to come pitch for us?’” Winters said. “You’d have to say ‘yes.’” A 1987 graduate of Hastings College of Law, Winters joined Cooley in 1990 and became a partner at the firm five years later. His clients have included Genentech Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and National Semiconductor Corp. Alan Mendelson, a partner at Latham’s Menlo Park office, said Winters’ move is “good for Weil and I assume for him and we’re disappointed.” “We welcome Vern to our patent litigation team, which we have now built to include over 100 attorneys working with a diverse range of technology clients around the globe,” Matthew Powers, head of Weil, Gotshal’s patent litigation practice, said in a release.
