But it wasn’t any of these perks that led several of San Francisco’s public interest law firms to relocate to Oakland a few years ago.
“The rents were going through the roof,” recalls Lucas Guttentag, the director of the ACLU’s Immigrants Rights Project. “Oakland was much more reasonable, especially for a nonprofit.”
