Freed’s illness forced him to retire in April after nine years as Thelen’s executive director, said Richard Gary, Thelen’s chairman.

During his tenure, Freed helped guide the firm through the turbulence of the early 1990s, when Thelen and several other firms laid off staff and associates, Gary said. Freed also saw Thelen through its 1998 merger with New York’s Reid & Priest.
