Ten years ago, the 20-year-old woman — who’s the daughter of prominent Berkeley civil rights lawyer Alice Philipson — was adopted by her mother’s partner, Petra Liljestrand, legally giving her two moms. But that suddenly seemed in doubt.

“I was in disbelief that they could just take away my mother, that someone had the power to erase [10] years of my life,” she says. “The fact that someone had that kind of legal power was just a shock.”
