In a 2-1 decision, the court said the method, essentially created by the Department of Social Services, violates the statute governing adoption.

“Never before has a court anywhere in the country purported to cast into doubt the validity of thousands of finalized adoption decrees,” Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said in a statement Friday.
