Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge Bruce Van Voorhis is one of the few judges who will stand up to the district attorney’s office, said several attorneys who testified on his behalf Wednesday.

“DAs are not ruled against in court,” said Barry Blackie Burak, a Walnut Creek criminal defense attorney. “Some judges are afraid to come down on DAs” and when one finally does, he said, prosecutors “get offended by it.”

Burak and other defense witnesses seemed to open the possibility that misconduct allegations against Van Voorhis have been fueled by sour grapes at the DA’s office.
