Linda Stanley, the U.S. trustee for Northern California, Eastern California and Nevada, announced Tuesday that Attorney General John Ashcroft had removed her from office in an order signed June 18. The order is effective July 3.

The move came as a surprise to Stanley, as well as her staff. “It’s stunning news for everybody here,” said Stanley, who noted that many of her staff had been crying.
