A woman who witnessed the dog mauling of Diane Whipple through the peephole of her apartment described the horrifying scene in a Los Angeles court Wednesday, recalling a voice crying out: “Help me! Help me!”

Esther Birkmaier remembered the growling and barking of dogs that led her to look outside.

“I thought to myself, ‘The dogs sound rather loud today,’” she testified. Then, after hearing the cries for help, she said she peered through the peephole and saw a body on the floor with long hair, wearing light-colored clothes.
