Your Jan. 4 article incorrectly described lawyer and philanthropist Joe Jamail as “The King of Torts.” Joe’s former law partner, Judge George Cire, made the definitive statement on this topic in 1977 when I clerked for the judge. This was an age when well-known trial lawyers had nicknames: Harry “The Cat” Patterson (once the lead trial lawyer of Bracewell), Jim “Fat Man” Kronzer (one of the best appellate lawyers in Texas), and others.

A Houston Post article referred to Joe as “The King of Torts.” Judge Cire read the article and said, “Joe’s not ‘The King of Torts,’ that’s Melvin Belli. It’s a nickname, not a title.”
