The Georgia First Amendment Foundation gave its Charles L. Weltner Freedom of Information Award on Thursday to the state Judicial Qualifications Commission for its work in promoting open courtrooms across the state.

Troubled by judges who were barring members of the public from courtrooms across the state, the seven-member judicial disciplinary agency issued a strongly worded opinion last year declaring that, except in rare circumstances, public access to Georgia courtrooms must be “unfettered and unobstructed.”
