With the misguided goal of helping their employer and the aid of language barriers, local hires may endeavor to bridge the gap between a multinational company’s restrictive code of conduct and the inappropriate expectations of local officials by, for example, recording bribe payments as something that is more palatable to the company.

As more companies emphasize the importance of antibribery compliance, some local employees understand that it is an important corporate goal, but still believe in error that covering up instances will help to achieve that goal.
