A law firm that allegedly violated New Jersey state law by engaging in the debt collection business can be sued under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a federal judge ruled Thursday in a precedential opinion.

District Judge Freda Wolfson in Trenton allowed a putative class action to proceed against Lauri Hudson and her firm, Hudson Law Offices, P.C., in Turnersville, N.J., based on the lawyer’s purported violation of the state Professional Services Corporation Act, which makes it illegal for professional corporations to render services other than the ones for which they were incorporated.
