Crowell & Moring has launched an affiliate office in Cairo and has formed an alliance with another law firm in Saudi Arabia. In Cairo, it will work under the sponsorship of Hegazy & Associates, and in Saudi Arabia, it will operate an alliance with Al Enizy & Associates. The moves are part of the law firm’s efforts to boost services for its North American, European and Latin American clients with business in those regions. Work focuses on government contracts, corporate matters, mergers and acquisitions and financing. Other areas include energy, Islamic banking and real estate. Crowell & Moring also represents clients based in the Middle East and North Africa, including First Kuwait General Trading & Contracting, the State of Bahrain and the State of Qatar. The move was prompted by an expanding client base in Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Emirates, Lebanon and Turkey, the firm said. Kent Gardiner, Crowell & Moring chairman, said the arrangements with local firms will add “regional experience” to Crowell & Moring’s global capabilities. Al Enizy & Associates has offices in Riyadh and Jeddah. With a location in Cairo, Hegazy & Associates is led by Walid Hegazy, former head of the Islamic finance practice group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Only a handful of U.S. law firms have their own practices in Saudi Arabia, including DLA Piper, Baker & McKenzie and White & Case. Fewer have their own Cairo practices. Baker & McKenzie is one. Crowell & Moring has about 300 attorneys in Washington, D.C., and 430 firmwide, according to the NLJ 250, The National Law Journal‘s annual survey of the nation’s largest law firms. The firm has eight offices, including one in London and another in Brussels.
