Davis Polk & Wardwell and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom scored lead roles in the biggest energy deal since 2006 — Exxon Mobil’s decision to acquire the Texas-based natural gas company XTO Energy for $31 billion.

Davis Polk reprised its role as lead M&A counsel to Exxon Mobil. The firm, led by M&A head George Bason Jr., represented Exxon when it purchased Mobil for more than $80 billion a decade ago. Bason did not return messages seeking comment.
