The evaluation process in general, and the self-assessment aspect of it in particular, can be a source of anxiety for associates. Linda E. Laufer, the firmwide director of attorney development at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and author of Crossroads, a weekly career advice column, provides some general guidance on what types of components a self-assessment can include, and how associates should approach their answers. Laufer also notes that attorneys shouldn't overlook how the evaluation process can benefit them.

Q: I am a first-year associate, soon to be a second-year associate at a large firm. This fall, I will be evaluated by the partners. I have been told that I have to evaluate myself in a self-assessment. I’m concerned about what I should include. What do they expect to see? Should I be concerned about bragging?
