Newly elected Texas criminal district court Judge Kevin D. Fine has brought a bittersweet qualification to his position: recovering addict. A decade ago, he overcame a dependency on drugs and alcohol. When Fine decided to run for a judgeship, he worried about his background as a recovering addict -- and as a Democrat -- but neither factor kept him from reaching the bench. Helping addicts get clean, sober and out of the court system, he says, was "my whole reason for wanting to run."
