A Cook County jury last week awarded a 72-year-old lawyer a $41 million verdict for medication mismanagement that allegedly led to a cerebral artery stroke, making it the largest amount ever awarded in Illinois for a medical malpractice case with a client over 70.

Attorneys from Hurley McKenna & Mertz in Chicago obtained the jury verdict May 7 against the Peoria-based OSF HealthCare System, an Illinois nephrologist, a kidney care corporation and a dialysis service, on behalf of Craig Pierce and his wife. In 2016, Pierce, a criminal defense attorney, suffered a catastrophic stroke resulting from medical professionals failing to properly manage his blood thinning medication Coumadin, a brand name for the commonly prescribed anticoagulant, warfarin, his attorneys said.
