A Georgia man who’s spent nearly 22 years of a life sentence behind bars was granted a new trial this week after a Gwinnett County judge found incentivized testimony and a victim’s unreliable identification were used to convict him in 2003.

Sandeep “Sonny” Bharadia was granted habeas relief by Gwinnett County Trial Judge Laura Tate in an order filed April 9, in which the court found his constitutional rights were violated when police used faulty evidence to charge him with burglary and sexual assault. Bharadia was convicted by the Superior Court of Chatham County in 2003.
