The greatest challenge facing Canada’s large law firms in 2023 is not a potential recession but a lack of coherent public policy, Canadian lawyers say. 

“We need to be realistic on things like the energy transition, how long it’s going to take, we have to preserve the old before we get the new, and sometimes people forget that,” said Hugh MacKinnon, chairman and CEO of Bennett Jones, which has one of the largest energy practices in the country. “So coherent public policy would be helpful.”
